Employer and Community Partnerships
When Matt Hamilton, the Coordinator of the Digital Arts Technology Academy at Cathedral City High School, and a team from the Desert Sun newspaper hooked up for a joint project, the result was a mobile phone application that tied together the entire Cathedral City High School community, both inside and outside the walls of the school site. For many years, the DATA journalism students had been producing news programs on local network television, public service announcements and short documentaries. The partnership is a win-win for both entities; the Academy students, with support from IT, graphic arts and news professionals, have the opportunity to reach their peers, their parents and their neighbors through their most common communication carrier, the smart phone, and the newspaper team gets to view the world from the eyeballs of the Millennial Generation. This is a pilot program supported by the Palm Springs Unified School District and the Desert Sun newspaper, part of the Gannett Corporation.
