Middle School Connections
Early adolescence is the prime developmental time to support students in addressing key identity issues, such as who they are, what they are passionate about, and how they can use their education to pursue their passions. This pre-session will address why schools are more successful when they support students in their development and implementation of flexible long term (10 year) plans by or before they reach the critical 9th grade. This approach, when implemented effectively, leads to both student and school success! The presenters will also review resources that are being used throughout California, and nationwide, by teachers, counselors, parents and others in helping students develop capacity to make informed career and educational choices. Our emphasis will be on standards-based approaches as well as student centered systems development, with an emphasis on middle, high, and postsecondary coordination. This session will combine presentation and discussion with highly interactive segments. Furthermore, we will provide convincing evidence showing both how and why this approach is a highly effective strategy for transforming schools and achieving student success.
